You can use the tool to enjoy life and animated wallpapers with their own sound to add some flair to your PC setup. In this guide, we will tell you everything you need to know about Wallpaper Engine and how you can use it on your computer
In order to purchase the Wallpaper Engine software, head over to the official Steam page and you will be able to check out all of its features. The application will cost you around 3 to 5 dollars depending on your location.
Once you purchase the application, it will appear in your Steam Library as Wallpaper Engine.
You can launch it by double-clicking on its name or add it to your favourites by right-clicking on the name and then selecting the add to favourites option.
After launching the program, it should appear in the taskbar next to the system tray.
Open the system tray and right-click on the Wallpaper Engine icon, you will notice a bunch of options appear on your screen.
Select the change wallpaper option from the menu and Wallpaper Engine will open up on your screen.
If you are using multiple displays then you will need to select the one where you wish to apply your wallpaper. You can also choose to split your wallpaper if you are using an ultra-wide monitor setup with multiple displays.
It’s time to select the resolution of the wallpaper that you will use. If you are not sure about the resolution of your monitor then right-click on your desktop and select the Display Settings option.
Here you need to scroll down and you will be able to check the current resolution of your monitor and also select the recommended display resolution and scale.
In the Wallpaper Engine Display menu, you can also choose to mute the sounds of the wallpaper for a specific monitor
The installed tab in the program will appear empty if you have not installed any wallpapers. To find new wallpapers, navigate to the workshop tab and you will be able to find the wallpaper of your choice.
You can also search for a particular wallpaper or sort the list of wallpapers using filters such as Top Rated, Most Popular (Year), Most Popular (Month), Most Popular(Week), Most Popular (Today), Most Recent, Most Up Votes and Most Subscriptions.
Under filtered results, you can improve your search results by adding more metrics such as the type, age rating and resolution to find the wallpaper that best suits you.

After you subscribe to a wallpaper that you like, it will take a few moments for it to download. These wallpapers can range in size from less than one Megabyte to a couple of Gigabytes depending on what you are looking for.

Now head over to the General Tab and untick with the Start with Windows option. This will prevent Wallpaper Engine from running as soon as you boot up your computer helping you reduce the usage of your resources especially if you are using low-end hardware.
In the Advanced Options, ensure that Process Priority is set to normal and in case your performance is bottlenecked by your CPU then make sure to enable the UI Hardware Acceleration option.
This will shift the load of the Wallpaper Engine to your graphics card and reduce the stress on your processor.
In order to have an optimal experience while using Wallpaper Engine, make sure that your graphics drivers and Operating System is up-to-date.
You can update your graphics driver by opening the Geforce Experience program if you have an Nvidia GPU or AMD Aderalin Software if you have an AMD GPU. Click on the download button in the driver’s tab and your drivers will be automatically updated to the latest version available.
This can bring a substantial boost in the performance as having the latest drivers can fix bugs and bring improvements under the hood.
You can also ensure that you are using the latest version of the Operating System available for your computer such as Windows 11 and also the latest security update since they bring substantial changes improving your overall performance of the computer.
Head over to the Settings application and then click on the Update & Security tab. Here you will be able to find the latest updates by clicking the check for updates button.

Wallpaper Engine also grants you the flexibility to create and customize your own custom wallpaper from scratch. In order to do so, first, download an existing free-to-use wallpaper from Unsplash.
This website allows you to download and use pictures for free in a high-resolution image format. Once you find a particular wallpaper that you like, make sure to download it to your system.
Now head back to Wallpaper Engine and click on the Wallpaper Editor option. Using this feature, you will be able to create your own wallpaper from scratch by using a template or editing a recent wallpaper.
In case you are using this feature for the first time then it is highly recommended that you use a template first.
You can also drag and drop your downloaded wallpaper into the application. Set a project name and colour scheme for the wallpaper and then click on OK.
After a few seconds, your background picture will appear in the editor which you can zoom in or zoom out using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
Using the menu on the right side, you can add effects to your images such as animation, blur effects, distortion, and enhancement with more effects available for download in the Steam Workshop by selecting the Browse Workshop option.
The menu on the left will allow you to add layers and change scene options with more presets available to download in the Steam Workshop. In order to preview the effect and other changes, click on File→Apply Wallpaper and the wallpaper will be previewed as your own desktop wallpaper.
If you wish to publish this wallpaper then click on Workshop and select the Share this Wallpaper option. Here, you will need to add a name, genre and description for your new wallpaper.
Set the Age Rating option and visibility to Public, Friends only or Private depending on your preferences and make sure to add a preview image for your new wallpaper.
