NHL 23: How To Do All Dekes & Puck Handling

October 18, 2022
Here is how you perform all the dekes in NHL 23!

The latest iteration of the leading hockey simulator game, NHL 23, is officially here and it did not take time for players to recreate the sport’s most iconic plays in-game. As flashy as some of the passes and shots are, there is just that distinct feeling of satisfaction when nailing dekes in this game. Not only do performing them look cool, but they can also confuse opponents making scoring much easier.

In this guide, we will be showing you how to perform all the dekes in NHL 23.

How To Do All Dekes & Puck Handling

For the purpose of this article, we will be detailing the controls of each deke using the Xbox controller and using a left-handed player. Take note that doing these moves is practically the same as using the PlayStation controller – it’s just that the names of the buttons are different.

As per the dominant hand of the controlled player, it is also basically just the same, you’d just have to flick the sticks in the opposite direction.

Windmill

The Windmill is perhaps the easiest deke to perform in the whole game. To do the Windmill deke, all you have to do is to press the left bumper of your controller and flick the right stick to the right.

Your player should transition the puck from the left to the right, doing the Windmill deke.

Spin O Rama

To do the Spin O Rama deke all you have to do is to press the right trigger as your player skates with the puck. This will make him spin to hide and protect the puck for a brief second.

Take note that some players may perform this move much slower.

Jump Deke

Jump Deke is another straightforward deke to perform. To do the Jump Deke, all you need to do is to flick the right stick upwards while holding the left bumper.

This will make your player jump while still handling the puck.

Skate Kick

Next is the Skate Kick. Much like the Jump Deke, all you have to do to perform this move is to flick the right stick downwards with the left bumper held on.

This will make your player bounce the puck to his skate and then back to him again.

Toe Drags

To do the Toe Drag, you need to rotate the right stick in a half-circle motion from the 9 o’clock position to the 3 o’clock.

Datsyuk Flip

Now things get tricky. To do the Datsyuk Flip, you have to press down on the right stick and then hold the right bumper. After that, flick the right stick downwards releasing it.

If you do this right, your player should essentially fake a shot and flip the puck upwards a bit.

Datsyuk Shot

Just like the Datsyuk Flip, you need to press down the right stick, but this time, do not hold the right bumper.

After pressing the right stick, flick it downwards then immediately upwards to make your player take the shot.

Between The Legs

820

Doing this deke should see your player hide the puck between his legs. To do this, hold the left bumper then click on the right stick in one motion.

Between The Legs (Shot)

Do the Between the Legs deke then just flick the right stick upwards to force your player to take the shot.

Between The Legs (Pass)

Do the Between the Legs deke then press the right trigger to make your player pass the puck to his teammate.

Sweep Deke

Sweep Deke is performed by basically flicking both the left and right sticks in opposite directions back and forth. When done right, your player should sweep the floor with the puck from one direction to the next.

Behind the Back

Doing the Behind the Back deke takes a bit of practice. To do this deke, you need to hold the left bumper and make a semi-rotation on the right stick from the 3 o’clock position to the 9 o’clock.

But before actually hitting 9 o’clock, flick the stick upwards for your player to take the puck to his front again.

One-Handed

To do the One-Handed Deke, flick the right stick to the right while holding both the left and right bumpers.

This should see your player leave the puck for a bit in the direction you flicked the right stick to then come back for it again.

One-Handed (Shot)

This is basically the same as the previous deke. The only difference here is that you are trying to take the shot using it.

Just do the same button prompts while near the net to do this.

Svechnikov

Another tricky deke to perform is the Svechnikov. To do this, you have to click on the right stick while holding the left bumper. After that, quickly rotate the right stick from the 9 o’clock position to the 3 o’clock position all the while still holding it down.

This one takes a bit of practice but is a very handy deke to get into your arsenal.

Kucherov

To do this deke, hold the left bumper then slide your right stick from the left to the right all in one motion.

It’s like the Windmill deke but here, you are actually trying to score.

Chip Deke

The Chip Deke is performed by holding the right bumper and rotating the right stick from about the 7 o’clock position upwards in one quick motion. Your player should do a quick flip with the puck.
