Check out this guide to see how you can complete the Root of Nightmares raid encounter in Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 is a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter game developed by Bungie and published by Activision. The game is set in a fictional universe where players assume the role of a Guardian, a protector of Earth’s last city, and are tasked with defending the city and the Traveler, a celestial being responsible for the city’s survival. In Destiny 2, you can play in different modes such as PVP, PVE, and complete different online events.

In this guide we will go through the Root of Nightmares Raid and show you how you can complete it.

Root Of Nightmares Raid Encounter | Survive the Onslaught

First Encounter

The first phase requires you to activate all nodes that are scattered around the map. Whenever a player is inside the orbs and they shoot them, they will receive a buff called Field of Light. The buff is refreshed whenever you go back into the glow and shoot the orb.

There is a wipe mechanic in this phase and it’s called Sweeping Terror. There is a timer on this mechanic. To extend the timer on the Sweeping Terror mechanic, you will need to continuously kill Tormentors.

These Tormentors will pop up on the map in different areas and this is the time when you need to have two groups where four players will clear ads and Tormentors, and the other two players will constantly renew the Field of Light buff.

To spawn Tormentors fast, you will need to kill Psions. These are the mobs that have orange shields around them.

The travelers, aka the players who chase the Field of Light, will see lines that will direct you to the next orb which you need to attack and renew your buff.

Whenever travelers run out of glowing orbs, they need to look around the area and see where there is an orb with an aura around it. Go there, renew the Field of Light, and look for the final non-glowing orbs to complete this phase.

You need to repeat this phase multiple times until all orbs have been activated until you fully complete this first encounter.

Encounter 2

This encounter is similar to the previous one, here you have two buffs that you need to focus on, these buffs are:

  • Field of Light
  • Flux of Darkness

The flux of darkness can be activated by attacking the orange orb with orange aura around it, and the field of light is the same as the previous encounter.

The encounter is split into two areas where there is a giant gap in the middle in which you can die if you fall into it.

Split the team into two groups, three members need to go left, and the other team needs to go right.

On each side, you need two members to clear ads and to have one runner. The runners need to focus on the orbs and activate the non-glowing ones.

Here the runners will be required to go into the opposite side of the map by using the jump pads and gather the buff from there and take it to wherever the next orb is located.

To get launched on the other side, stand in front of the launching pad and shoot the button that is right in front of it.

The two runners can decide whether they want to only stick to one orb color or get the one closest to them to finish the encounter faster.

My recommendation is for each runner to focus on their orb color and not mix up the flow. That way you will secure the encounter easily.

You will also be able to communicate with each other to see where the non-glowing orb is located and get to that area faster without searching too much.

The shooters need to clear ads, but also keep the runners protected at all costs. Shooters, try to walk sometimes with the runners and clear their path.

Encounter 3

Once you’ve reached encounter 3, you will see a bunch of planets in a giant room. Your goal here is to move the planets in a specific motion.

When the planets have been set in the correct motion, you can then start damaging the boss.

Special shout out to Cosmic_irony for providing a very simply drawn schematic of the room and where things are located to be able to orientate yourself easily.

Split your team into two groups. Two players need to roam around the room and try to kill all incoming ads.

Four runners need to split up on the right and left side of the room. Each runners needs to pick a starter point for a triangle and start the encounter from there.

Once the encounter has been started, you need to shoot the first incoming ads which will spawn Terrestrial Lieutenants.

The runner’s goal here is to kill the Lieutenant that has spawn in their triangle as fast as possible. This is a MUST for the runner because once the killer has killed the Lieutenant, they will get a buff called Planetary Insight.

Once the buff has been picked up. You will notice that the planets above the triangle will start to glow either light or dark.

Here you need to align the planets to where the right side has all 6 dark glowing planets and the left side has all 6 light glowing planets.

The drawn image above shows numbers. You can use these numbers to see exactly where the runner needs to go to align the planets.

From this point on, you need to keep your focus to the middle of the room where there are going to be three more planets which will also glow light or dark.

Your next job is to get the buff from the triangle and take it to either a dark or a light glowing planet (depending on what type of a buff you’ve obtained) and activate the planets.

Once all planets have been correctly aligned and activated, you will see a small button in the middle of the room that you need to shoot. From that point on, the boss will drop and have an armor.

To damage the boss, you will need to stand on a plate that has the same color with the aura.

  • If the armor of the boss is orange, stand on an orange plate.
  • If the armor of the boss is white, stand on a white plate.

After all three plates have been passed, you will need to repeat the whole process one more time to fully complete the encounter.

Encounter 4 – Boss Encounter

In the final encounter, you will fight against Nezarec.

The whole group needs to split into three groups of two:

  • Two players on the boss
  • Two players on clearing ads
  • Two Runners

The runner’s requirement here is simple. Run to either buff (light or dark) and obtain it. Look for the small non-glowing orb

The players who clear ads have a simple job. One needs to stay on the left and the other on the right side. Simply clear all the incoming ads to proceed through the encounter.

The players who focus Nezarec, will need to see where Nezarec is charged to. He will focus one target. Your job here is to harass Nezarec as much as you can.

On Nezarec, you will see a glowing part that is either on his shoulder or chest. You need to aim for that glowing part on his body to delay his wipe mechanic and push him back.

When the runners complete their runs and the orbs have been set up correctly, it’s all about DPS. Continue to stack on different platforms where the boss has struggled to take you.

Eventually, you will need to repeat the whole process one more time and eventually defeat the final boss of the whole raid.

And there you have it. That is how you can complete the Root of Nightmares raid in Destiny 2.
